Appointment of new Chair of Trustees

We are delighted to announce the appointment of Professor Sir John Holman as Chair of Trustees of the Bridge Group.

John is Emeritus Professor at the University of York and senior adviser in Education at the Wellcome Trust and the Gatsby Foundation, and author of Gatsby’s Good Career Guidance. He is Immediate Past President of the Royal Society of Chemistry, Chair of the Teacher Development Trust and a Trustee of the Natural History Museum. He was the founding Director of the National Science Learning Centre and adviser on education to the government from 2006 to 2010. John was Headteacher of Watford Grammar School for Boys from 1994 to 2000 and was knighted in 2010 for services to education.

Reflecting on his appointment, John commented: “I admire sincerely the Bridge Group’s grounded and robust approach to advancing social equity. I was honoured to be asked to become a part of this inspiring and pragmatic team, whose mission is more critical now than it has ever been.”

John succeeds Dr Tessa Stone, to whom we are deeply grateful for a decade of guidance, commitment and activity. Tessa commented: "It has been a privilege to see the Bridge Group grow from a conversation to a Charity whose research is providing universities and employers with the practical means to improve the socio-economic diversity of their students and staff. It has also been an enormous pleasure to work with such an exceptional group of staff and trustees, and I know they will ensure that the Bridge Group’s impact continues to increase."
